The SPT (Standard Penetration Test) Trip Hammer with 3 Pawls is a specialized drilling tool designed for geotechnical and environmental drilling applications, specifically tailored for performing the Standard Penetration Test. Here's an overview of its key features and functions:

Key Features:

  1. Standard Penetration Test (SPT): The primary function of the SPT Trip Hammer with 3 Pawls is to conduct the Standard Penetration Test. This test is essential in geotechnical engineering to evaluate the subsurface soil conditions and gather data for engineering analyses.

  2. Triple Pawl Mechanism: The inclusion of three pawls enhances the stability and reliability of the hammering action during the SPT process. The triple pawl design ensures secure engagement with the internal rod assembly, providing consistent and controlled blows for accurate testing.

  3. Driving Split-Spoon Sampler: Similar to its 2-pawl counterpart, the trip hammer with 3 pawls is designed to drive a split-spoon sampler into the ground. The split-spoon sampler collects soil samples as it is driven into the soil, allowing for subsequent analysis of soil properties.

  4. Accurate Penetration: The triple pawl mechanism contributes to precise and controlled penetration during the SPT. This precision is crucial for obtaining representative soil samples and accurate measurements of blow counts per unit of penetration.

  5. Compatibility with Drilling Equipment: The SPT Trip Hammer with 3 Pawls is designed to be compatible with drilling rigs and equipment used in SPT applications. It integrates seamlessly into the drilling system, providing a reliable and standardized solution for soil testing.

  6. Safety and Ease of Operation: The design of the trip hammer prioritizes safety and ease of operation. Safety features and user-friendly design elements contribute to the overall efficiency and security of drilling operations.

  7. Data Collection: The number of blows required to achieve specific depths, as recorded during the SPT, is a critical piece of data. This information is used to assess the subsurface conditions, determine soil types, and aid in engineering analyses for foundations and construction projects.

The SPT Trip Hammer with 3 Pawls is a sophisticated tool designed to enhance the accuracy and reliability of Standard Penetration Testing, providing valuable data for geotechnical engineers to make informed decisions in construction and engineering projects.

How It Works

The SPT Trip Hammer is part of the drill string and is positioned above the split-spoon sampler. The split-spoon sampler is a thin-walled tube that collects soil samples as it is driven into the ground. The drilling rig lifts the entire drill string, including the trip hammer and attached split-spoon sampler, to a predetermined height and then releases it. The weight of the hammer, along with the energy from the fall, produces a hammering action on the split-spoon sampler.

The hammering action drives the split-spoon sampler into the soil. The number of blows required to advance the sampler a specific distance (usually 12 inches or 300 mm) is recorded. This value is known as the "N-value" and represents the Standard Penetration Resistance. As the split-spoon sampler penetrates the soil, it collects soil samples within its interior. The collected samples are considered disturbed due to the dynamic nature of the penetration, but they provide valuable information about the soil composition.
