IADC Codes
IADC codes are a standardized way to classify and describe tricone (or rotary) drill bits used in the drilling industry. These codes help drilling professionals identify the specific type of tricone bit they need for a particular drilling application. The IADC code typically consists of four characters and provides information about the bit's design, cutting structure, and bearing/seal system.
- First Character (Formation Type)
- Second Character (Bit Profile)
- Third Character (Bit Type)
- Fourth Character (Additional Features and Special Designations)
For example, an IADC code like "537" might indicate a tricone bit designed for drilling in very hard formations (5), with a TCI bit profile (3), featuring sealed roller bearings (7).
