Selecting the Right Bit

Down-The-Hole (DTH) drilling is a highly efficient and versatile method of rock drilling. In this technique, a pneumatic or hydraulic hammer is used to deliver powerful, rapid blows to the rock surface, breaking it apart for excavation. The drilling tool, known as a DTH hammer, is fitted with various drilling bits, allowing for precise and effective penetration into a variety of geological formations. DTH drilling is widely employed in industries such as mining, construction, geotechnical exploration, and water well drilling, providing a robust and adaptable solution for reaching depths and formations that may be challenging for other drilling methods.

  • Button Inserts

Button bits are the most common design and are ideal for drilling through hard and abrasive rock surfaces. They have a strong rugged shape for high performance and good service life. Particularly suitable for very hard abrasive rocks and deep hole drilling.

  • Chisel Inserts

Chisel bits, are used for drilling through hard rock surfaces and are ideal for drilling straight hole. The bits are suitable for soft/medium compact low abrasive rocks, producing large cuttings. Not suitable for badly fractured rocks.

  • Semi-Ballistic Inserts

Semi-Ballistic Inserts are suitable for all soft/medium rock conditions including fractured and fissured rocks. They are usually more expensive than alternative bits but are more versatile and leave more room for error, which can prove cost effective in the long term.

  • Convex

A Convex head design is a strong design for all conditions, especially hard abrasive rocks. They provide a good balance of fast drilling and long bit life.

  • Flat Face

A flat face head design is an alternative design from the convex design that is good for all rock conditions, especially fractured and fissured rocks and changing formations.

  • Concave

A concave head design is also great for all rock formations, but it thrives during deep hole drilling operations. These style bits can help improve hole alignment due to the inverted pilot of the head.
